Projectors

A golf simulator projector — also called a simulator bay projector or indoor golf projection system — must meet three technical requirements your room imposes: the correct throw ratio for your ceiling-to-screen distance, enough lumens to overpower ambient light, and a resolution matched to your impact screen size. GolfSimPlanet carries short throw projectors and normal throw projectors from BenQ and LG — ranging from 2,500 to 6,000 lumens, in WUXGA, 1080p, and 4K UHD resolution, with LED and laser light sources rated for 20,000+ hours. Short throw models (throw ratio 0.5–0.8) are designed for rooms under 15 ft deep where the projector mounts close to the screen, eliminating swing shadows. Normal throw models (throw ratio 1.3–1.7) suit deeper rooms of 15 ft or more where the projector mounts further back, delivering sharper brightness-per-dollar at higher lumen ratings. Minimum recommended brightness for a home simulator bay is 3,000–4,000 lumens; rooms with windows or controlled commercial environments benefit from 5,000–6,000 lumen laser models. All projectors in our catalog are compatible with GSPro, E6 Connect, and TGC 2019 running on Windows PC. Short Throw vs. Normal Throw Golf Simulator Projectors

Throw ratio is the single most important spec for simulator projector placement — it defines how far the projector must sit from your screen to produce a given image width. A throw ratio of 0.6 means the projector needs 0.6 ft of distance per 1 ft of image width. Choosing the wrong throw type for your room is the most common and most expensive mistake in simulator builds.

Short Throw Projectors (ratio 0.5–0.8)

Ceiling-mounted 3–6 ft from the screen. Eliminates the golfer’s shadow from swing path. Ideal for rooms 10–15 ft deep or setups where mounting space behind the hitting position is limited. All short throw models at GolfSimPlanet support keystone correction and lens shift for precise image alignment without physical repositioning.

Models available: BenQ LH600ST (2,500lm LED), BenQ AH500ST (4,000lm 1080p laser), BenQ AH700ST (4,000lm 1080p laser), BenQ TK700STi (4K HDR), BenQ TK710STi (4K 3,200lm laser), BenQ LU935ST (5,500lm WUXGA laser), BenQ LU960ST2 (4K WUXGA laser), BenQ LK936ST (4K HDR laser), LG ProBeam BU53RG (5,000lm 4K laser)

Normal Throw Projectors (ratio 1.3–1.7)

Mounted 10–18 ft from the screen, typically at the rear of the bay. Delivers higher brightness-per-dollar and sharper contrast at equivalent price points compared to short throw. Best for rooms 15 ft+ deep where rear ceiling mounting is possible. Low input latency on BenQ laser models (under 16ms) ensures real-time display sync with launch monitor data output.

Models available: BenQ TK710 (4K 3,200lm laser), BenQ LU710 (4,000lm WUXGA laser), BenQ LK935 (5,500lm 4K laser), BenQ LU935 (6,000lm WUXGA laser)

How to Choose a Golf Simulator Projector: 4 Key Specs

Every projector in a golf simulator build must be evaluated on four attributes: throw ratio, lumens (brightness), resolution, and light source type. Each affects image quality, room compatibility, and long-term cost differently.

Spec What It Determines Recommended Range for Golf Simulators
Throw Ratio Distance from screen needed per 1 ft of image width 0.5–0.8 (short throw); 1.3–1.7 (normal throw)
Lumens (Brightness) Visibility with ambient light; image vibrancy on impact screen 3,000–4,000lm (dark rooms); 4,000–6,000lm (ambient light or commercial)
Resolution Course detail, texture sharpness, fairway/green clarity 1080p minimum; 4K UHD for screens 10 ft+ wide
Light Source Lifespan, maintenance cost, color accuracy Laser (20,000+ hrs) strongly preferred; LED acceptable for budget builds; lamp not recommended
Input Latency Sync between launch monitor data and projected image Under 16ms; all BenQ laser models in our catalog meet this threshold
Keystone Correction Geometric image correction without physical repositioning Vertical ±30° minimum; lens shift preferred for permanent ceiling mounts

Golf Simulator Projector FAQ

Can I use any projector for a golf simulator?

No. A standard home theater or office projector will likely have the wrong throw ratio for your simulator bay, insufficient lumens for ambient light conditions, and high input latency that causes visible lag between ball strike and projected flight path. Golf simulator projectors — including all models at GolfSimPlanet — are selected specifically for throw ratio range, brightness, low latency, and compatibility with impact screen materials.

How many lumens do I need for an indoor golf simulator projector?

3,000–4,000 lumens for a dedicated dark room with no windows. 4,000–5,000 lumens if your simulator room has ambient light from windows or overhead lighting that you can’t fully control. 5,000–6,000 lumens for commercial simulator bays with controlled lighting and extended daily operating hours. Impact screen material also affects brightness requirements — high-gain screens reflect more light and can compensate for lower lumen ratings.

Is a 4K projector worth it for a golf simulator?

Yes — for screens wider than 10 ft running E6 Connect, GSPro, or TGC 2019 at high settings. 4K delivers noticeably sharper fairway textures, green contours, and sky detail compared to 1080p at that screen size. On screens under 9 ft wide, the improvement is less perceptible and a high-lumen 1080p model like the BenQ AH700ST delivers better value.

What is keystone correction and do I need it?

Keystone correction adjusts the projected image geometry digitally to compensate for off-axis projector angles — essential when the projector cannot be mounted perfectly centered and perpendicular to the screen. All BenQ laser models in our catalog include vertical keystone correction; premium models include lens shift, which corrects image position optically (preferred over digital keystone for preserving resolution at the edges of the image).

How long does a golf simulator projector last?

BenQ and LG laser projectors are rated for 20,000 hours of operation — at 4 hours daily use, that is over 13 years before significant brightness degradation. LED models have shorter rated lifespans but lower upfront cost. Traditional lamp projectors are not recommended for simulator use due to bulb replacement costs and brightness drop-off over time.

Where should I mount a golf simulator projector?

Ceiling mounting directly above or slightly behind the hitting position is standard for short throw models, placing the projector 3–6 ft from the screen at ceiling height. Normal throw models mount further back toward the rear of the bay, 10–18 ft from the screen depending on model. GolfSimPlanet carries ceiling mounts, drop mounts, frame mounts, and floor enclosures compatible with all BenQ and LG models. Our team calculates the exact mounting position for your room at no extra cost.
